We always encourage customers to regularly service their garage doors, but as this is something we charge for, we leave it up to the customers to give us a call to arrange.
Why get a service?
It’s especially important to service electrical garage doors due to this effectively being a machine. Garage doors have springs on them that take up the weight of opening and closing and these lose their tension over time and will need to be adjusted. If the springs are needing adjusted and the door hasn’t been serviced at all then this would make the door very unsafe. This is most important reason to service in my opinion.
If it’s a new door then you will need to keep it serviced to maintain the warranty with the manufacturer. If they ask us for service history when you need to claim warranty, and you don’t have any then they may not honour warranty. The manufacturer knows a well serviced and well looked after door will rarely need warranty, so this is why they ask.
What is included in a service from Tayside Garage Doors?
We will test the batteries in your remotes, and change them, if necessary. We will check all fixings are secure, lubricate, and point out any defects the door has developed to name a few. We also include a six-month warranty on our servicing, we have done this for those whose motors might be on their way out, servicing sometimes prolongs the life for a short period or sometimes much longer, or those customers who have never serviced their doors as they may need more lubricant etc. If you call us back within those 6 months our second visit will not be charged for. We also provide a check list with your invoice detailing the work we have done.
How long is it likely to take?
Gavin who does our servicing and repairs, has been doing so for nearly 20 years, so he can normally do a service in around 15-20 minutes. He’s become very efficient at his job over this time and has pretty much seen everything that can go wrong with a garage door. I’m sure he has seen it all!
What can you do to look after your garage door?
Remove any dirt, salt and grit from tracks and other moving parts. The lifting gear of your up and over and sectional door should be oiled regularly, (at least four times a year, depending upon location and site) using a light oil or maintenance spray. All moving parts should be oiled and especially all pivot points, running tracks (do not grease them) and tension springs. Periodically check all fastenings for tightness. Do not oil the lock cylinder; if it is sticking, lubricate with graphite dust. Roller doors do not require oiling. A silicone lubricant spray should be applied to the tracks after cleaning.
What do we need from you?
If you are giving us a call to get booked in for a service, it’s very important that we are told the make and model of your door so we can ensure our team are trained on servicing your door and have the correct experience to do so. We would also need to know an idea of size, i.e. single or double and if its electric or manual. If it’s a door we have installed, then we will likely find you on our database and will have all the details needed. We also need safe working room, so if you could clear your garage back allowing us full access to all apparatus with ladders. The ideal space depends on the type of garage door you have. If you have specialist flooring down, or other decorative finishes around the door we would need these to be removed for servicing. Garage doors tend to have a build up of dirt that could leak out when we add the lubricant to your door or as it moves around your door during use after our visit.
